Ian Smith, BA, Dip Lib, MSc, MCLIP Ian is a director of Smith Halsall. He is a professional librarian, a member of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals with an MSc. in Information Studies. He has worked in academic libraries, the voluntary sector and local authorities in London. He produced a Community Profile of Westminster, and contributed chapters to Perspectives of public library use 2, published by Loughborough University. His reviews and articles have appeared in the professional press (Journal of Librarianship and Information Science, Public Library Journal, ASLIB Proceedings). Ian designed and ran the course Report writing with WORD : skills, techniques and styles, for Westminster. He taught English in a secondary school in Amman, Jordan, and spent two years in Zanzibar, Tanzania, developing school and college libraries. Ian has wide experience of public speaking, lecturing, presenting research to an audience, and training. |

He has written a biography about the Victorian mountaineer - Shadow of the Matterhorn: the life of Edward Whymper - which came out this year and was shortlisted for the Boardman Tasker prize for 2011. Ian also published an edition of Whymper's diaries for the London Record Society in 2008. |
